The Builder
Yacht building

The ‘Stavoren cutter’ was a hit and the yacht was available as a motor sailer and a motor boat. Many cutters proved their seaworthiness during long sea journeys and the boats became increasingly luxurious over the years, equipped with the latest technologies. The development from a simple and sturdy yacht based on a fishing cutter to a luxurious, fullyequipped motoryacht for people with no connection to the fisheries industry whatsoever lead to the yard’s move in 1988. The old location continued to build ships while the yacht building activities were moved to a new location on Kooijweg, overlooking Stavoren harbour.

In the mid 1990s, Anton’s eldest son, Auke van der Werff, took over the Volharding yard and like his father before him quickly changed course. He renewed the Stavoren cutter and called it the Sturiër. This marked the beginning of a new era for Volharding. After the initial success of the Sturiër, an entire range of luxury boats was designed under the same name for the premium global market segment. An international clientele started arriving in Stavoren.
